New MRI for the Lowy Cancer Institute University of NSW – Purchase cost approx $3,000,000.
The important criteria being that the new MRI unit could not be jarred, bumped, tilted or moved by forklift and must be kept level at all times. It was taken from the truck in the loading dock at road level via an access tunnel then to basement via the lift shaft.
Lend Lease engaged Nova Engineering to design a lifting frame to be fastened to the lift shaft walls. Then having an engineered scaffold erected to form a platform for the MRI, which weighed 5.6 Tonnes, to be inserted into the lift shaft with only millimetres to spare.
The MRI was then lifted by our 10 Tonne chain block and fixed to four safety points to allow the scaffolders to dismantle the scaffold and rebuild it at basement level.
Nova Engineering riggers and fitters then lifted the MRI on the chain block and released the safety points and lowered the MRI to basement level where it was manoeuvred into its’ final position in a purpose built room.
This project took many weeks of planning and a 16 hour day to complete once the lifting frame and scaffold were in place.
